Semi Sabbatical – Month 10

So long, 2022… and hello, 2023! We started off the New Year in Hawaii for a little longer before heading back to the East Coast. We slowly made our way out of the winter weather, as we made our way south through the Carolinas to Georgia.

Aiea, Hawaii

Oahu is not short on hikes by any means. The Aiea Loop Trail is a great woodsy hike at the top of Aiea Heights, the hill I grew up on! This 5 mile loop is shaded for almost the entire time, but you’ll still feel the 1,300 ft total elevation gain by the end of this. On part of this loop, you can see the H-3 Freeway going into the mountains!

Kahala, Hawaii

It’s never a trip home without stopping at one of my favorite beaches. I used to come to this little beach all the time in high school to get away from all the *drama* of teenage life. It’s still a nostalgic place for me to visit to this day! Plus, it’s never crowded, so you feel like you’re on a semiprivate beach.

Norfolk, Virginia

After 24 hours of flying from Honolulu to Los Angeles to Chicago to Norfolk, we made it back to the east coast! We enjoyed our housesit for a sweet beagle named Daisy. The neighborhood it was in had a great running path along a river, so we bundled up and made sure that we had time to get daily walks/runs in around this gorgeous town.

Charleston, South Carolina

After Norfolk, we headed to Charleston, because I had a work retreat to attend! Unfortunately, the hotel they put me in was not pet friendly, so my husband and the pup had to stay at a different neighboring hotel. But we still got to spend the evenings walking around and exploring this historic town!

This picture above is at Rainbow Row, an eye popping row of pastel painted homes. The old Southern charm architecture in this city has been really well preserved, which makes this town feel like you stepped back in time in the Soouth.

Charlotte, North Carolina

We spent about a week in Charlotte housesitting right in the heart of “Uptown” – which is technically their Downtown, but no one really knows the history as to why it’s called Uptown! This picture is the view we had from the condo we stayed out, and it was such a stellar view of the city skyline.

Charlotte is a fast growing city, with so many people moving here for the lower cost of living and *relatively* mild weather. But I can see why! There are a bunch of hip and trendy neighborhoods, with food halls and a ton of breweries to go around. We were very surprised as to how much we enjoyed Charlotte!

Asheville, North Carolina

While Asheville may be known for their brewery scene and the next hit destination for bachelor and bachelorette parties, we got to enjoy the nature as well!

Asheville is nestled up in the Blue Ridge mountains at just over 2,100 feet. This somewhat secluded nature town has a long list of hikes that can be explored almost year round. What we were surprised to find was how many waterfalls we could hike to, and how close we could get to them!

Tybee Island, Georgia

We capped off January back at the beach…but this time, on the Atlantic coast! This little off-season sleepy beach town is located right outside of Savannah, Georgia, just south of the South Carolina border. Since it was off season, it wasn’t crowded at all. But we still enjoyed daily walks along the beach, and just taking in the chill, relaxed ambience of the beach town.

Although we could see some great sunrises off the coast, if you head southwest side of the island, you can watch the sunset as well. I never thought I could watch a sunset over the water on the East coast until now!

We’ll continue our travels south and spend the next month in Florida! We’ll visit some theme parks, check out some springs, and hit the beach again. And hopefully we’ll encounter some Florida wildlife along the way!

Semi Sabbatical – Month 9

December 2022 was full of a lot of traveling across multiple time zones! From the Northeast, to heading a little more south along the Atlantic coast, to traveling to the West coast, then capping the year off in my home state of Hawaii… it’s been a great way to end the year!

Cape Cod, MA

We finished off our time in Boston by driving down to Cape Cod! Even though it’s too cold to go to the beach, I can totally see why it’s such a popular summer getaway! The beaches are pristine, and the sun was shining the entire time we were there. We enjoyed a beer at a local brewery right along the coast, so we could stay warm indoors and still get a killer view.

Portland, ME

A three hour drive outside of Boston, we took a day trip to Portland, Maine! The lobster rolls there were outstanding, and all the lighthouses in the town were cool to see. Even though it was raining, we didn’t let the weather stop us from enjoying the sights. Plus we got to see my husband’s cousin, which was an added bonus!

Scarsdale, NY

This quaint little suburb outside of NYC was a great place to relax before we prepared for the busy travel schedule we had ahead of us. The walking paths around the main Village area were perfect for a quick jog with a nature feel. We housesat for two chill Shitzus, in a stunning house just a quick walk away from their main Village area. This sleepy little town was perfect for us to wind down and enjoy the simple pleasures.

Pittsburgh, PA

The moment I had been waiting for…my first ever Steelers game, in Pittsburgh! And they were playing their rivals, the Ravens! I bought my first Terrible Towel, and we enjoyed being a part of the Pittsburgh culture of their love for the team. Unfortunately, our starting QB was on concussion protocol after the first few plays of the game, so we didn’t do as well as I would have liked. But we still enjoyed the experience regardless!

Virginia Beach, VA

We visited one of my best friends from childhood in Virginia Beach, which was so nice! Even though it was chilly, we still enjoying walking along the boardwalk and checking out the Atlantic Ocean views. Our dog even got to meet her dogs, which we never thought would happen before we started traveling. We got to spend some much needed quality time and catching up after not seeing each other in over a year!

Manhattan Beach, CA

We jumped on a plane heading west and spend a few days in LA! Our good friends was getting married, so we figured why not make a trip out of it? We visited some of our favorite places in South Bay, our old stomping grounds. And you can’t visit LA without walking out on the Manhattan Beach pier!

KAUAI, HAWAII

After our friends’ wedding, we headed even more west…back to my homeland, Hawaii! We decided that since we would be in Hawaii for 3 weeks, why not visit one of the neighbor islands as well? So, we Hele On to Kauai!

Lihue

We stayed in a little motel right in the heart of Lihue. We chose this place because it is situated halfway between the south shore and the north shore, perfect distance for our quick trip! Plus, it was walking distance to many shops and restaurants, which was a huge plus! We ended up splurging at a fancy restaurant overlooking the water, using the money we were refunded from our cancelled boat tour due to weather conditions.

Waimea Canyon

The next day, we headed south of Lihue to Waimea Canyon. When we first arrived, it was so foggy and you couldn’t see anything! But as we hiked to Waipo’o Falls, the fog cleared and we had some amazing views of the canyon! We stopped in Waimea for some plate lunches, and it was some of the best chicken katsu we’ve ever had.

Hanalei

On our last day, we drove up to the north shore, but not without hiking to see the Sleeping Giant on the east side. We headed to Hanalei, where we tried a taro teriyaki burger, which was a great vegetarian option for us. We hung out in Hanalei Bay and soaked in the sun before we flew back to Oahu that night.

OAHU, HAWAII

Celebrating Christmas in Hawaii is the best – sunny skies, warm weather, and surrounded by my family. But of course, we still find time to explore!

Lanikai

One of our favorite activities to do in Hawaii is play golf! The warm weather allows for us to golf any day of the year, no matter what time of year we visit. Our favorite place to golf is Mid-Pacific Country Club in the neighborhood of Lanikai on the east side of the island. I was fortunate enough to grow up playing this course, so my dad loves taking the both of us golfing any chance we get.

White Plains, Ewa Beach

My favorite underrated surf spot on Oahu is in Ewa Beach at White Plains! We took my cousin out with us to surf too, as she hadn’t been surfing in years. The mild waves and long rides here are perfect for beginners and seasoned surfers alike. Plus, you get a great view of Diamond Head in the distance, which is cool!

Pearl Harbor Sunset

Even though my dad still lives in the same house I was born and raised in, the sunsets over our view of Pearl Harbor still amaze me every time we’re home. I grew up in Aiea Heights, just outside of Pearl Harbor. The views of the Arizona Memorial and the Battleship Missouri are things I grew up with every day, but didn’t realize how awesome and historical it was for me to experience this until I left the islands. So while we’re home, we take in as many sunsets as possible!

Makapu’u Lookout and Tidepools

On the last day of the New Year, we got our workout in and hiked up to Makapu’u Lighthouse and Lookout. This hike takes you to the most eastern tip of O’ahu, and gives you stunning views of the east coast. On a clear day, like the day we hiked to the stop, you can see the island of Molokai in the distance!

DCIM\100GOPRO\GOPR3003.JPG

We also hiked down to the tidepools, where you can enjoy the cool waters of the swimming holes before you make your way back down the trail to your car. It’s a great way to cool off after that glute buster of a hike!

We’ll be in Hawaii through the New Year, then it’s back to the mainland to head south for the winter!

Semi Sabbatical – Month 8

This month of our semi sabbatical has much more travel as compared to last month! We spent November in multiple places in the Northeast. We got to experience the transition from Fall into Winter, which was really nice. We primarily did housesitting through Trusted Housesitters this month, so it took us to places that we may have never thought of visiting!

Alexandria, VA

We housesat for two chill Great Pyrenees dogs and a little gray cat in the suburb of Alexandria, just 30 minutes outside of Washington D.C. We were not expecting to see as much fall foliage here, but we were pleasantly surprised by how much we saw!

On one of our running routes in the neighborhood, it took you through the woods where all the leaves were the perfect mix of fall colors.

Washington, DC

Although we spent most of our time in Alexandria, we still made it to DC! We primarily explored the Logan Circle area, where we enjoyed the local breweries and spent time with some old friends. One of the best parts about this semi sabbatical is that it is allowing us to reconnect with old friends. And lucky for us, the weather was uncharacteristically warm that day, so we got to hang out outdoors which was great!

Boyce, VA

We completed another housesit in the country of Northern Virginia, in a small town located 1.5 hours west of Alexandria. This log cabin was off a gravel road, surrounded by trees, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. The home had an amazing view of the valley and the trees as they began to lose their leaves during our stay.

We spent a day in Shenandoah National Park, where we got to hike in the valley and enjoy the solitude and the sound of the leaves crunching under our feet. I had never known much about this national park, but thank goodness we’re on this semi sabbatical that allows us to explore regions of this country we would have never thought to visit!

We heard there were some pretty sweet caverns in the area, so we checked out Luray Caverns. And although it seemed pretty touristy, it was still a sight to see! The mile stroll through the caverns seemed very surreal. It kind of felt like we were in a Disneyland ride! It was definitely worth it to see these crazy looking caverns.

Burlington, VT

Our next housesit was for the most adorable Pomsky right outside of Downtown Burlington, Vermont! We were just a 5 minute walk from Church St, a pedestrian only walking path amongst all the shops, restaurants and bars that Burlington has to offer. But what we were looking forward to most…was the beer!

We got to visit The Alchemist Brewery, home to the famous Heady Topper IPA. Not only did we pay a visit to buy multiple cans, but it is also the only place that serves it on draft. It started snowing right when we pulled up, which made it so picturesque and a gorgeous winter wonderland for our beer adventure!

We also made sure to try the other local breweries in the area as well: Foam Brewers, Idyletime, Von Trapp, Burlington Beer, Zero Gravity, and Four Quarters. They all had great beer, and I see why Vermont has become such a hub for craft beer!

Rochester, NY

We headed west to upstate New York, to the city of Rochester, for Thanksgiving! We housesat for a loving and sweet black Labrador, who enjoyed our company…especially when we were cooking food.

When we weren’t stuffing our faces with food, or watching World Cup games, we ran along Lake Ontario. Lake Ontario which pretty much looked like an ocean because it’s so big. You can’t even see across of it!

Niagara Falls

We couldn’t be in upstate New York and not visit this world wonder! We spent Thanksgiving Day visiting Niagara Falls…New York, USA, and Ontario, Canada!

From Niagara Falls, NY, you can cross a pedestrian bridge over the Niagara River to the town of Niagara Falls, Ontario. So we had lunch in Canada and enjoyed the full view of the falls from our northern neighbor!

Boston, MA

We capped off this month of our semi sabbatical of November in Boston, MA! We just arrived to our little Airbnb just outside of the city. We’ll spend the first week of December here, and we’re excited to explore New England!

Semi Sabbatical – Month 7

We made it to New York City! We stayed the whole month of October in a cozy Airbnb in the Upper West Side. The location was perfect for exploring the city during our semi sabbatical. And we definitely took advantage of it!

Central Park, Manhattan

Our Airbnb was right off of Central Park West, so we walked into Central Park every single day during our stay. The park is massive, and a great getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. My favorite part about the park was watching the leaves change color over the month! Fall is such a great time in New York City.

You can really get lost in the park and forget you’re in NYC. Enjoy a picnic in the Great Lawn, take a stroll around the Reservoir, or go on a long run around the whole park. It’s a must see when visiting NYC! We really enjoyed going during the week, when it wasn’t as crowed. The benefits of being on a semi sabbatical!

Riverside Park, Manhattan

Riverside Park is, in my opinion, the most underrated park in Manhattan. It follows the length of the west side of Manhattan along the Hudson River. This park is so special to me, because this is where I found my love for running during PT school. Going to school up in Washington Heights, running down to Riverside Park and running up and down the greenway was such a great escape from the stresses of my program.

It’s still so wild to me that New Jersey is just on the other side of this river! You can get to New Jersey from Manhattan over the George Washington bridge (pictured above), or through the underground tunnels either via car or subway. For Manhattan being an island, there is no shortage of ways to get access in and out of the city!

One World Observatory, One World Trade Center

We went to the One World Observatory at night, where we got 360 degree views of the city! You take an elevator ride up to the top, where they dramatically reveal the views from the top. You can walk around and see Manhattan, New Jersey, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. The Statue of Liberty even looks tiny from this view!

Broadway – Harry Potter and The Cursed Child

We couldn’t come to NYC and not see a show! We love musicals, but we decided to opt for something different. As Harry Potter fans, we really enjoyed this play! This play is about Harry and Ginny’s son, Albus, and the adventure he goes on with his unexpected best friend, Scorpius Malfoy. Definitely worth watching if you love Harry Potter!

It was also great because we were able to score discount same day tickets through TKTS. We caught a midweek show, which was nice because it wasn’t that crowded and we were able to score some great tickets close up for a discounted price!

All. The. Food!

New York City has a pleuthra of amazing food to choose from. So don’t mind the excessive amount of food pics here 🙂

We did the Ultimate Chinatown Food Tour, and we were not disappointed! In 2.5 hours, we tried 5 different restaurants, all within a short walking distance of each other. We tried peanut noodles, soup dumplings, fried dumplings, har gow, and ube sponge cake!

We had the biggest platter of spaghetti I’ve ever laid my eyes on at Carmine’s. The portion sizes are enormous, so this platter fed us again for lunch the next day!

It wouldn’t be a trip to NYC without dim sum! We decided to try Jing Fong on the Upper West Side. We got the shu mai, har gow, steamed pork buns, and fried dumplings – delicious!

And we obviously had the NYC classics – pizza slices, bagels, halal food, etc. We are leaving NYC with full bellies, and full hearts!

For me, the best part about visiting NYC was seeing all of our friends from PT school. The hubby and I met in NYC while we went to PT school. Since graduating over 6 years ago, while some of us have moved to other parts of the country, we still have friends that have stayed in the city. Being able to spend so much time with them this month was so amazing. This confirmed why we decided to take this semi sabbatical – to help us reconnect with our loved ones across the globe!

We’ve got a bunch of travels coming up in November for month 8 of our semi sabbatical. We’re looking forward to exploring the Northeast!

Semi Sabbatical – Month 6

The summer has come to an end so quickly! And what better way to end the summer by exploring more of Colorado, and making our way across the country to the East Coast.

Boulder, CO

We started off September going on a hike with my husband’s sister and her puppy in the mountains of Boulder! Boulder situated right along the mountainside just under 30 miles northwest of Denver. It’s a gorgeous college town, with so many hiking trails with stellar views of the city!

Denver, CO

We got to go to the Friends Experience during its tenure in Denver! We got to explore replica sets from the famous TV show. From Monica and Rachel’s kitchen, to Joey and Chandler’s living room, to hanging out on the couch in Central Perk… we felt like we were in the show!

Conifer, CO

We spent Labor Day weekend dog sitting for our friends in their home in the mountains! It was a great getaway, and we got to spend the time relaxing and being in the outdoors. The fact that hiking trails are just a few minutes away, we had to give into the temptation to go hiking. The weather was great – when there’s a heat wave in Denver, the weather in the mountains is perfect!

Orlando, FL

We made our way to Orlando for a few days to attend FinCon, a conference for personal finance creators. I learned SO much from this conference. It got me so excited to continue working on this blog and helping other allied health professionals get their personal finances in order.

Fairplay, CO

We capped our last weekend in Colorado with a weekend up in the mountains! Fairplay is about 1.5 hours outside of the city of Denver, and is known for its old timey western downtown area. We rented a house out there for the weekend, where we spent a lot of time relaxing and enjoying the peaceful outdoors.

We hiked up to Crystal Lake, which although just a moderate gradual incline, felt much harder due to the elevation. The start and end point were over 11,000 feet! But the views of the mountains were so worth it.

Kansas City, MO

We drove across eastern Colorado and all the way across Kansas to get to Kansas City, Missouri! We spent a weekend here eating our way through all the Kansas City BBQ and enjoying this small city.

The downtown area was full of cool breweries and distilleries, and the River Market area had an amazing farmer’s market held weekly! The view from the WWI memorial of the city skyline at night was a great way to cap off the weekend.

West Plains, MO

A little over 4 hours south of KCMO is the small town of West Plains, where we visited some of my husband’s family. We got to see the town where his grandpa grew up, and we learned more about his side of the family and their history. The area is lush and green and full of trees, and the local springs here are truly a gorgeous site to see. I had no idea how beautiful it is here!

Chattanooga, TN

Next we headed to Chattanooga, where we visited some of my family! My aunt enjoyed sharing her hometown with us, and took us all over the city. My uncle, a retired history professor, enjoyed sharing the history of the area with us as well.

It was nice and sunny while we were there, so we got on the pontoon and explored Chickamauga Lake! We went up to Point Park, where we got amazing views of the city of Chattanooga, and all the surrounding foothills.

We also went on a hike, where we got to see the Blue Hole and enjoy the lush, green nature of the foothills of the Smoky Mountains. Deeks enjoyed the ride, too!

As September comes to a close, we will be settled in New York City for the whole month of October. We’re looking forward to revisiting our old stomping grounds – this amazing city is where my husband and I first met 🙂

Semi Sabbatical – Month 5

From the PNW to Denver, Colorado!

August was such a fun month! We spent the first half in Oregon, exploring the city of Portland and spending some much needed down time on the Coast. But after these last few months, it’s time for us to move on with our semi sabbatical travels. So midway through August, we made our way out of the Pacific Northwest…to Denver, Colorado!

Multnomah Falls, OR

To get to Portland from Tri-Cities, you drive west along the Columbia River. About 30 minutes before you reach the city, you pass by a gorgeous waterfall called Multnomah Falls. Even during this random crazy heat wave, we had to stop to see the falls!

Can you believe this gorgeous waterfall is right off the freeway?!

Multnomah Falls is very popular, which means that getting a great view of the waterfall was very accessible. We didn’t hike up to the top, but the view from the bridge and feeling the mist on our faces made is a great experience!

Hillsboro, OR

We had a housesit for three adorable little dogs in Hillsboro, a suburb of Portland. With this semi sabbatical, our remote work allows us the flexibility to explore more often. Less than a half mile away from the house was a stunning hiking trail, surrounded by trees and streams! We definitely took advantage of this, running daily through the forest and truly living our best Pacific Northwest lives.

Running through the trails right near our housesit in Hillsboro, OR

Portland, OR

The city of Portland is one of the coolest cities we have ever experienced! The people of Portland are so unique and welcoming and friendly. The food here is so creative and delicious. And the scenery of all the pine trees and the bridges over the Willamette River make this city so picturesque!

When we first got to Portland, it was a crazy heat wave. So we found a beach off of the Willamette River in Lake Oswego, just south of Portland. We spent the afternoon hanging out in the water to cool off. Since it was so hot, the cold water in the river felt so refreshing.

Swimming in the Willamette River south of Portland

One of our favorite memories from Portland was going on an Ice Cream Tour. Over 2 hours, we walked almost 2 miles and stopped at 4 different ice cream stops and tried over a dozen ice cream flavors!

Just a few flavors that we tried at Salt and Straw
Matcha milkshakes and ice cream sandwiches from Tillamook Creamery

Oregon Coast

We rented a beach cottage in the small town of Rockaway Beach for a week to enjoy the ocean before we leave the Pacific Northwest. It was such a great, quiet getaway from us! Even though we are still working remotely during this semi sabbatical, being able to take breaks during the day to go for a walk along the beach is something that really makes this experience worthwhile.

Rockaway Beach, OR

One of our favorite parts about the Oregon Coast is that the beaches are dog-friendly! We were able to take Deeks to beach with us everyday. He absolutely loved the freedom to sniff around and explore!

Roaming around in the tidepools in Seaside

The ocean here is significantly colder than what we’re used to in California and Hawaii. You definitely need a wetsuit if you’re going to get in the water! But the weather was still sunny and warm, which was perfect for laying out on the sand.

Hood River, OR

We left the coast to start heading East! Our route took us along the Columbia river, so we stopped in Hood River, just an hour outside of Portland. The topography of the Columbia River Gorge makes it consistently windy year round. A perfect destination for windsurfers and kitesurfers!

I think I need to become a windsurfer now!

So, I had to see what all the fuss was about. I took my first windsurfing lesson, and I had so much fun! I totally understand why people love windsurfing, and I’m looking forward to trying it again in the near future.

Denver, CO

We made it to Denver after 2 long days of driving. My sister-in-law lives in Denver, so we’ll be staying with her for the next few weeks! We actually lived in Denver for a summer back in 2015 while we were doing our PT school clinicals. Now that we’re back for our semi sabbatical, you can expect us to take full advantage of the nature that Colorado has to offer!

View of Red Rocks from the top of Dinosaur Ridge

Golden, CO

Golden is a cute mountain town just outside of Denver as you make your way into the Rocky Mountains. As you drive up Golden Gate Canyon road, you will find many different trail heads to explore! We chose to take Deeks in the hiking backpack, so we picked a 4 mile loop trail that goes up to Mt Galbraith. To our east, we had awesome views of the city of Denver. And to the west, we saw never ending views of the Rockies. Definitely a great, quick hike in the mountains that isn’t too far outside of the city of Denver!

Deeks’ favorite way of hiking – without any actual exercise

Evergreen, CO

We did an early morning hike to Maxwell Falls during the week! The flexibility of our remote work during this semi sabbatical allows us to be able to plan for these midweek hikes in the mountains. We drove out to Evergreen, another small and beautiful mountain town outside of Denver. The trailhead was pretty much vacant – a great reason to hike midweek first thing in the morning! Since it’s the end of summer, the waterfall wasn’t too big. But it was still amazing to look at, and walking along the creek listening to the water really set the tone for this relaxing, cool hike!

We had the waterfall all to ourselves this early Wednesday morning 🙂

Encinitas, CA

We did a quick weekend trip to Encinitas for our friends’ wedding. Encinitas is a stunning beach town about 30 minutes north of San Diego. We enjoyed the gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean, and were able to even get in the water briefly before we had to leave. When we lived in San Diego, we loved going up to Encinitas in the summer. It was so nostalgic to be back!

Viewpoint overlooking Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas

We’ll continue into September here in Denver, with a weekend trip to Orlando, and making our way across the country to New York by the end of the month. Next month will be very busy, but very exciting as we continue this semi sabbatical journey!

Side Hustle Highlight – Uber Eats

One of the easiest side hustles I have ever done is food delivery. I started working for Uber Eats in 2020, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Because of the shut down, my work at the PT clinic could no longer provide me full time income. So to make up for those lost hours (and to get out of the house!), I began to deliver food!

How to Sign Up to Become an Uber Eats Driver

It was very easy to sign up. I Google’d “How to Become an Uber Eats Driver,” and the first link took me to this page:

You sign up with your basic information and complete a background check. You will also need to add your car information, driver’s license, vehicle insurance, direct deposit information, and upload a profile photo. Additionally, you will have to fill out some tax info, as you are being hired on as a 1099 independent contractor.

You will complete all this other tasks on the Uber Driver app. This app is very important, because this is how you will receive and complete deliveries.

The process to get approved took a couple weeks, but once I was approved, I was ready to hit the road!

How To Start Delivering Food

Now that you’re approved, open the Uber Driver app to get started. Your home page will look something like this:

So friendly of Uber Eats to welcome me!

This map allows you to see what areas are having a higher volume of deliveries, so you can have a better chance of receiving a delivery request. Once you’re ready to go online, you hit the GO button, and you will start to receive delivery requests!

Advantages of Uber Eats Delivery Driving

Make Your Own Schedule

I only go online when I feel like it! During the COVID-19 pandemic, I was able to do deliveries when I wasn’t seeing patients. This flexibility was crucial for me, as I was still working part time in the PT clinic.

Don’t have to say Yes to Every Delivery Request

When you receive a request, you can Accept or Deny it. I typically will hit Deny when the delivery is too far and the pay doesn’t make sense for me to go that far. I may also hit Deny when I know it’s delivering in a not-so-great area of town. Either way, you have the freedom to choose!

Get to Explore Your City

We were new to South Bay Los Angeles when I started delivering. It was a great way to explore my neighborhood! I learned traffic patterns and street names, and eventually realized that I could find my way around the area just by street name. I don’t think I would have felt more comfortable getting around my neighborhood without delivering!

Learn About Local Restaurants

I had picked up food from little hole in the walls and local restaurants that I had never heard of before. I would keep all these places down on a Note in my phone, and when I got home I would research them all. It was a great way for me to find new places to try! If someone was ordering takeout from here, it must be pretty good.

Disadvantages of Uber Eats Delivery Driving

Gas/Fuel and Car Wear-And-Tear

If you drive a regular car like me, you need gas in order to run the car. With gas prices skyrocketing the last few months, it has definitely been tougher for Uber Eats delivery drivers. Even if you have an electric car, you are still putting more miles on it than if you were to just use it a few times a week, causing natural wear-and-tear to the vehicle. Most people only use their car to get to and from work, and to run occasional errands, so you may find yourself needing to do more auto maintenance than you are used to.

Busy Only During Lunch and Dinner

Yes, the hours are flexible. However, you will have a much higher chance of making money when you’re working during peak hours. For Uber Eats, it’s lunch and dinner. The rates even go up during this time in some locations! But that may mean you probably will be eating your own meal at an off time, or maybe even in your car in between deliveries.

Mostly Relying on Tips

Uber Eats itself doesn’t pay that much for the delivery, so most of your payment is coming in the form of tips. Uber Eats does give the customer a recommended tip amount, but ultimately it is up to the customer to make the decision of how much to tip you.

Overall Opinion on Uber Eats

For me, it was a great adjunct when I was only working part time as a PT. I would only do a few deliveries a day, for maybe 1-2 hours at a time. In the cooler months, I would bring my dog along with me to keep me company, which was fun! I also used the time to catch up on podcasts, which was great.

But sometimes, the deliveries would take me farther from home than I would have preferred. The money was inconsistent, as some days had more tips than others.

There are better, more passive ways to make money through side hustles. However, if you’re in a pinch, and want to make a quick buck, this may be the side hustle for you!

Semi Sabbatical – Month 4

July 2022, in the books!

Wow, time sure is flying during our semi sabbatical! This summer is going way too fast. And we’ve officially left the east side of Washington state and made our way to Portland! But not without a couple of other fun Washington getaways plugged in between as well.

Goldendale, WA

We started the Fourth of July weekend at Maryhill Winery, located on the Washington side of the Columbia River, about halfway between Portland and Tri-Cities. The view of the river from up on the cliff was breathtaking! And the wine and flatbreads made for a perfect summer lunch.

Not a bad view!

We also stopped by the Stonehenge WWI Memorial. The memorial is a full-scale replica of the original Stonehenge in England.1 It overlooks the Columbia River, which makes it a great place to enjoy the sunrise and sunset. There is also a with a great diagram and explanation of why it was placed as a WWI Memorial, along with its use as a seasonal sun chart.

It’s like we’re in England! But way hotter and drier haha

San Juan Island, WA

We rode the ferry about an hour to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island from Anacortes, which the grandkids absolutely loved.

On the ferry over to San Juan with my dad and his wife!

We spent a few days at a gorgeous lakeside resort with my Dad and his wife’s side of the family in San Juan. While the other family members got to enjoy the glampsites, we got a lodge room with our own personal fireplace and lanai overlooking the lake.

View of the lake from our lodge room

We took a kayaking tour on the west side of the San Juan, which was so fun! We saw a few harbor seals, a fried egg jellyfish, and even a bald eagle. We also ate some kelp, which surprisingly wasn’t as gross as you would think. You can also see Canada across the horizon, which was mind blowing.

Just across the water, is Canada!

Seattle, WA

After we left San Juan Island, we spent a few days in Seattle housesitting, so that we could spend more time in the city with the family. We watched a Mariners game, walked around Pike Place Market, and enjoyed lunch at The Crab Pot.

If you wanna see some fish get thrown around, this is the place to go!

We even got to run around Lake Union with our friend who we met in PT school. Running really is a fun way to explore the city!

Lake Union, Seattle

Leavenworth, WA

To break up our drive home, we stayed overnight in Leavenworth. Leavenworth is a Bavarian style village located about 2 hours east of Seattle. Before it was a Bavarian village, it actually was a logging and sawmill town. Unfortunately, the railroad was re-routed in the mid 20th century, leaving Leavenworth to fight to stay alive. So in the early 1960’s, they decided to change the town’s appearance to a Bavarian style village to attract vistors that may be passing though. And thank goodness for that, because now it is a top tourist destination in the Pacific Northwest!2

Such a cute little Bavarian village!

Wenatchee, WA

Once we left Leavenworth, we drove about 20 minutes to meet up with some of the family to go white water rafting! We were led on a 2-3 hour rafting experience down the Wenatchee River. While the temperature outside was hot and dry, the river water was quite cold. Good thing we had wetsuits! We all survived the rapids, and have great memories from this one of a kind adventure.

I got to “ride the bull” during this rapid!

Quincy, WA

On our way back to Tri-Cities, we decided to spontaneously stop at this random scenic overlook in Quincy. And we are sure glad we did! This view of the Columbia River was stunning, and it made me realize how big the river is.

Wow, this river is WAY bigger than I thought!

Benton City, WA

After a crazy busy work week back from our family vacation, we needed a little break. Since we’re still working a bit during our semi sabbatical, we figured it’s time to take another quick break and go explore again!

So we headed to Benton City, just outside of the Tri-Cities area, to a winery call Terra Blanca. This winery is located on the slopes of Red Mountain, and their outdoor terrace has a breathtaking view of Yakima Valley and their vineyard. I see why this part of Washington state is considered the “Heart of Washington Wine Country!”3

View from the terrace

Bend, OR – Round 2!

The best part about a semi sabbatical is that we are slow traveling. This means that we can revisit cities that we enjoyed! So, on a whim, we spent a weekend in Bend, Oregon … again! This time, we brought along his parents. We walked along the Deschutes River the evening we arrived, which was Deeks’ favorite part.

The hubby and I did the Pilot Butte hike – a quick but steep climb overlooking the entire city of Bend!

View from the top of Pilot Butte – you can see all Three Sisters!

Then we met up with his parents and hiked the easy nature trail to Benham Falls.

The rushing water at Benham Falls

The rest of the day we walked around the Old Mill district. There were so many tubers out on the water! It was truly a sight to see, and next time we’ll make sure to rent some tubes and float down the river!

How relaxing does this look?

We ended up in Downtown for the evening, eating and drinking along the river at Bend Brewing. We met up with our friends that live in Bend, and it was so nice to see them again.

Portland, OR

After almost 2 months of our semi sabbatical with the hubby’s parents, we finally are saying goodbye. We’ll miss spending time with them, but we are ready for our next adventure!

We’re heading to Portland for a week long housesitting gig! Stay tuned for next month’s post to see all the fun and new places we’ll be heading. And I’ll give you a little spoiler alert – we will be leaving the Pacific Northwest in August!

How We Downsized – Using The KonMari Method

Because of the KonMari Method, we were able to tidy up and downsize for our sabbatical year!

Before we could begin to travel full time and live out of one car, we had to get rid of most of our stuff. Sure, we could have rented a storage unit and kept it all there while we traveled. But we weren’t attached to most of our belongings. In fact, it was more freeing for us to let go of these things and move on to the next chapter of our lives.

When we started the process of downsizing, I remembered the show on Netflix, Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. I found her show while scrolling through Netflix, and I was hooked immediately! I loved how she focused on keeping what you value, or as she would say, “Spark Joy.” If they no longer sparked joy, thank the item for the great memories, and let it go. Genius!

She even trademarked her philosophy – The KonMari Method™ – and has helped so many people worldwide tidy up their homes and their life.

In this post, I wanted to share how her 6 rules helped us to downsize to allow us to travel (note – I am not affiliated with the KonMari Method, I’m just a huge fan lol):

Rule 1: Commit Yourself to Tidying Up

It’s not just about saying that you’ll start tidying up. “…resolving to put in the time and effort required…”1 is the first and foremost rule of tidying.

For us, we had a timeline – we needed to tidy up and downsize before we could start traveling. But we found that having that timestamp really helped our case. We were also intrinsically motivated, as we have been waiting to travel for a while now. So we were excited to start this new chapter.

You may not be traveling like us, but maybe you just want to clear up some space. To be successful with this, you need to figure out the WHY behind your commitment to tidying up. If you don’t really know WHY you’re doing this, then chances are you will not fully commit.

Rule 2: Imagine Your Ideal Lifestyle

Tidying up your home isn’t just about having it look pretty. It’s a lifestyle change! This allows you to reflect on what you value and to live your life based on your values. For The KonMari Method, tidying up is a huge step in your life. Its purpose is to provide you life long changes for the better.

Our ideal lifestyle in this moment in time was to fully experience the world without too many distractions. The clutter in our home represented the distractions that did not allow us to really live the way we want to live our lives. Once we reflected on what we valued in life, the tidying up and decluttering was easy.

Now that we only have a handful of items to worry about as we travel, we can focus on being in the moment and creating memories. We have space in our minds, hearts, and our car, to enjoy every aspect of this adventure!

Rule 3: Finish Discarding First

The KonMari Method points out that discarding is not the main point, but still an important piece, as it allows you to “learn from your past experiences. If you let go of a belonging you never used, it taught that you have no purpose for something like it in your life.”

Reflecting on each item you possess, and how it aligns with your values, will allow you to start building the habit as you go on in life acquiring new items.

A great example of this is a photo frame we had with 10 photos of us in 10 different national parks. We still have the digital versions of these photos, and the memories we have from those trips are far more valuable that the physical copies. So we thanked the photo frame for giving daily reminders of our adventures, and for inspiring us to start this new adventure. Then we happily discarded it, knowing that it had done its job for that chapter in our life.

Rule 4: Tidy By Category, Not By Location

This is how we used to tidy up. Start in the bedroom closet, move on to the drawers, then tackle the kitchen, etc. But we found that this didn’t really give us a real sense of how much stuff we actually had of each type of item. By going through our stuff by ITEM, not where it was located in our home, allowed us to really see how much we had. And from here, we were able to slowly but surely tidy up our lives.

Living out of our car, we don’t have multiple places to store things. Because of this, tidying up by category made more sense. If we’re looking for something in our car, we know exactly where it is. This is because we have a place for everything. And since we have less, it’s much easier to find!

Rule 5: Follow The Right Order

Marie Kondo has a very specific way of tidying your belongings in this order: clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items) and sentimental items. This order starts with the easiest items, followed by the most challenging. By doing it in this order, your enthusiasm to complete the tidying stays upbeat. Kinda sounds like the snowball method for debt payoff, right? 😉

I’m glad that we followed this order when we were downsizing, because the sentimental items were VERY challenging. If we had started with those items first, we probably would have been burnt out to complete the other items! But as we were downsizing and tidying up our clothes, our books, and going through the order, we found it surprisingly got easier.

Rule 6: Ask Yourself If It Sparks Joy

I absolutely LOVE this concept about the KonMari method. It’s easy to keep items because you “may need it in the future” or you’ll “probably use it again.” But these answers show that you have not truly reflected on WHY you want to keep these items.

Self-reflection on what makes you happy is crucial to the success of tidying up with the KonMari method. According to the KonMari method, “Only you can know what kind of environment makes you happy.”2 As you go through tidying up, using your feelings to make the decision of whether or not to keep these items is a great way to reflect on what you value and if that item aligns with your values. Ask yourself, “Does this item spark joy?” By selecting only those items that spark joy, you’ll find that you will have a more clear idea of what you value and will start to live your life based on those values!

We found that many items gave us wonderful memories, but did not spark joy in our lives anymore. As we get older, our values have shifted. And that’s okay! We thanked each item for the memories it provided us, and we kept the items that continued to spark joy within us.

I hope that you find Marie Kondo’s method of tidying up useful. If you want to learn more about the KonMari method, click here!

Semi Sabbatical – Month 3

Summer is finally here, yay!

Happy June! After a fun last two months in multiple states and countries, we finally made it up to the Pacific Northwest, where we’ll be for the months of June and July. It was quite a journey to get up here, and we have never driven this route so far inland. But our travels have been nothing short of adventurous, which is the whole reason why we’re doing it!

Reno, Nevada

We left Lake Tahoe at the beginning of the month, and headed to Reno, Nevada. My dad and his wife were visiting for the week, as my dad was playing in a senior softball tournament.

My dad’s still got it!

It was so fun being able to see him play again! And these old guys really know how to play. There were so many teams, and the level of competition was pretty high. Unfortunately, my dad’s team didn’t make it to the championship round. But that meant that we could spend more time with them in the city of Reno.

Deeks, the hubby, me, my dad, and his wife

Bend, Oregon

After Reno, we drove up to Bend, Oregon. Bend is a gorgeous town located in Central Oregon, surrounding the Deschutes River. With the river running right through Bend, the town has made sure that there are ample walking trails for everyone to enjoy the sights.

Just a typical morning walk in the Old Mill District… we can get used to this view!

This town is made for outdoor activities year-round! In the warm summer months, you can enjoy hiking, biking, and running all the various trails located in and around Bend. In the winter, Mt. Bachelor is less than a 30 min drive from Downtown Bend, where you can enjoy skiing and snowboarding, along with using those hiking trails for snowshoeing and cross country skiing. With highest average number of sunny days in the state1, who wouldn’t want to be outdoors year round?

Deeks loves the view of the Deschutes from his stroller

Fun fact – the last operating Blockbuster is here in Bend! According to the employee, there are still a ton of people who still have their laminated membership cards and rent movies on a regular basis. Talk about a throwback!

Walking through here made me feel like a kid again!

Tri-Cities, Washington

After Bend, we made it to my in-laws house in Tri-Cities, Washington. After all the traveling we’ve done the last two months, we’re looking forward to spending some time here and staying in one place. We see his parents at least once a year, but it has been almost 4 years since we had been back to the Tri-Cities.

Deeks soaking up the sun in the backyard

Tri-Cities is a cluster of three town – Kennewick, Richland, and Pasco – that surround the Columbia River in southeast Washington. Because it’s so far inland, the climate is the complete opposite of the coast. It boasts 300 days of sunshine every year!3 It is also considered the heart of Washington wine country with over 200 wineries within a 50 mile radius.

Hiking Badger Mountain in Richland, one of the three cities that form Tri-Cities

Walla Walla, Washington

We visited Walla Walla, a wine country town just under an hour from Tri-Cities. We visited a local lavendar farm, where we got to pick our own lavendar and frolic in the fields (haha).

Look how happy he looks in that lavender field!

We spent the day at Waterbrook Winery, where we enjoyed a tasting in the warm summer sun listening to the bullfrogs. We stopped for lunch at an Italian deli called Cugini Italian Import Foods, where they had the best eggplant and roasted pepper panini I’ve ever eaten in my life!

What a view for this delicious wine tasting. There were DOZENS of bullfrogs in this pond!

Spokane, Washington

We also visited Spokane, where my husband and his old high school buddies got together to play in Hoopfest! Hoopfest is the largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament in the world.2 With around 3,800 teams participating this year, the streets were full of hoops and people of all ages enjoying the game of basketball.

Last time these guys played in Hoopfest was a decade ago! Wow…

Not only is Downtown Spokane along the Spokane River, but there are two waterfalls that flow right through! In the heart of the city, you can see a roaring waterfall and even take a gondola ride over the falls. And that waterfall was LOUD, you could hear it from the city even if you couldn’t see it!

Check out those raging falls!

Even though we’ll be spending the month of July primarily with family, we still have some fun weekend trips planned – stay tuned!
